Windows Crash - Cyber Incident Demo. My 4 Months on Linux Ubuntu - Impressions

Some kind of global cyber incident seemed almost inevitable. Simply because sooner or later something like this was bound to happen. And 2024 is the year when conspiracy theorists were basically expecting the launch of some new event that would shock the world. If not an "alien invasion", then most likely there was bound to be a cyber incident.

For now, the Windows failure that was observed on July 19, 2024, looks like a very light demo version. However, it is not yet known what this will result in, let's hope - without major consequences.

Perhaps it will become a good reminder that critical infrastructure cannot be completely dependent on such systems and that alternative options are needed, including a manual control lever and the skills to use it.

By the way, speaking of Windows, most users think that there is no alternative - in fact, there is..

I have completely stopped using Windows on my computer for several months now and have completely switched to Ubuntu. I had the old version of Ubuntu as a second system, next to Windows, for a long time. But there were difficulties with connecting Ubuntu to Wi-Fi and I did not want to deal with this, so I kept postponing the final transition to Ubuntu.

And after I recently updated Win7 to Win10 and realized that I did not like it, I decided...

I bought a normal Wi-Fi adapter that works without a driver and is suitable for Ubuntu. I added RAM to the PC. And installed a relatively fresh Ubuntu 22.04. Version 24 was recently released, I have not tried it yet, let them test it out for now.

And after several months that I work only with Ubuntu, without Windows at all, I can responsibly say that I am satisfied with everything. In addition, this is a completely free system - officially free.

A couple of programs that exist only for Windows are missing (Notepad+++, Photoshop, Fast Stone Image Viewer). But, firstly, there is an option to run these programs on Ubuntu via a special utility Wim lib. Frankly, this option is so-so. Secondly, there are free alternative programs that are created for Linux. It's a matter of habit, you just need to master new software. Mastering something new is useful. The main browsers, Telegram for a computer or the Filezilla program I need - have a version for Linux. I don't play games, and I don't know how things are with games for Linux.

As for simple everyday tasks - surfing websites, watching videos or listening to music, transferring photos, or working with text documents - there is no difference at all. All this is convenient with Ubuntu. For those who have long wanted to try, but did not dare, I recommend it.

The most difficult stage, as usual, is installation and configuration. Here you will have to google or contact someone who has experience. And then, there is almost no difference and it is even more convenient.

P.S. - Just today the news came that the Chinese Huawei decided to release a version of its Harmony OS for desktop computers.
